The key responsibilities of the role include:
Serves as a fraud prevention, detection analytics, and fraud intelligence subject matter expert, leveraging fraud detection platforms, data analysis, and investigative techniques to identify, prevent, and mitigate fraud risk.
Performs advanced analysis of fraud detection system outputs, alert populations, case outcomes, and operational data to identify fraud trends, emerging threats, control gaps, detection opportunities, and false positive reduction strategies.
Partners with internal technology, product, data, and development teams to enhance fraud detection capabilities, improve data quality, support system integrations, and fraud prevention initiatives.
Works directly with fraud detection vendors and service providers to evaluate system performance, investigate detection gaps, enhance detection models, improve fraud identification rates, and reduce false positive volumes.
Develops, maintains, and communicates fraud metrics, detection performance reporting, fraud intelligence, and emerging trends to fraud analysts and fraud leadership
Serves as a technical SME in areas of fraud, fraud prevention technology, fraud detection systems, and data analysis.
Interacts with employees across the enterprise (e.g., relationship managers, Legal Department, Human Resources, Technology, Risk Management, and Operations teams) and external parties (vendors, SMEs or other financial institutions) in the course of fraud prevention and investigative activities, as appropriate.
Consults with management regarding complex, sensitive, or high-risk fraud matters.
Support daily fraud alert reviews and post-mortem case investigation across multiple systems for both internal and external fraud risk
Reviews fraud alerts/behavioral anomalies, transactions, and ad hoc intelligence to identify potentially unauthorized activity or fraud.
Analyzes data using OSINT tools and techniques to reconcile potentially fraudulent activity, including complex account movements involving multiple transaction channels, accounts, applications, or client relationships.
Completes investigations to determine if a financial crime (fraud, money laundering, or terrorist financing) has occurred involving clients or internal employees
Serves as a key subject matter expert and mentor to less experienced analysts.
May manage daily operational activities and review work of less experienced employees (but not in a formal management role).
Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive data, systems, policies, analyses, and case details while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and corporate policies.
Completes process improvement initiatives, technology enhancements, fraud detection optimization efforts, and strategic fraud prevention projects as assigned.
Operates independently and carries out activities that are large in scope, cross-functional, and technically difficult.
Role is balanced between fraud prevention alert processing, fraud investigation, fraud prevention strategy, detection capability enhancement, and program development.
The successful candidate will benefit from having:
In-depth financial crimes and fraud prevention knowledge.
Knowledge of fraud detection methodologies, behavior-based analytics, anomaly detection, fraud intelligence, and prevention controls.
Understanding of fraud detection model performance, alert populations, detection tuning, false positive management, and fraud detection effectiveness measurement.
Current and historical knowledge of malware variants and common attack vectors, including AI-enabled fraud, high- and low-tech social engineering, and emerging AI threats.
Understanding of common industry client authentication processes, tools, and Internet security.
Understanding of traditional banking and fintech money movement systems and associated fraud risks, including wires, ACH, checks, card transactions, bill payments, Zelle, cryptocurrencies, and other digital transaction methods.
Understanding of fraud detection system design, integrations, event data, and detection strategy development.
General to advanced understanding of commercial web browsers, operating systems, and networks.
Knowledge of Northern Trust transaction processing systems preferred.
Technical Skills:
Experience with Actimize Xceed/Guardian Analytics, Verafin, or similar fraud detection and behavioral analytics platforms preferred.
Experience analyzing fraud detection system output data, alert populations, model performance metrics, false positive trends, and fraud detection effectiveness.
Experience partnering with technology teams, developers, data teams, and third-party vendors to enhance fraud detection capabilities and support system improvements.
Experience preparing and presenting fraud trend analysis, operational reporting, executive summaries, metrics, and recommendations to business and technical stakeholders.
Experience in phone interviewing for the identification of client impersonators and scams.
Experience with Copilot and use of agentic AI for OSINT, data analysis, and/or operational efficiency.
College or University degree and at least 5 years of relevant work experience preferred.
Experience in fraud prevention, fraud investigations, fraud analytics, fraud operations, risk management, cybersecurity investigations, data analytics, or a related discipline preferred.
Related industry qualification (e.g., ACAMS, CFE) or studying toward such designation preferred.
